Young billionaire Mircea Popescu, an early Bitcoin advocate, has recently been confirmed dead.
Costa Rica’s Office of Judicial Investigation (OIJ) recently announced the death of a 41-year-old male tourist while swimming in the sea. This person was later identified as the famous Bitcoin billionaire Mircea Popescu.
“The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. Popescu was swept away while swimming in the Tramonto area. Local rescue teams were unable to rescue them in time,” local media reported.
Earlier, Jacó Beach lifeguards reminded tourists that Paya Hermosa beach is not an area for swimming.
Mircea Popescu started researching and reporting on Bitcoin in early 2012. In July 2013, he sold SatoshiDice for over 125,000 BTC.
In 2016, he and a group of Bitcoin libertarians on IRC threatened to sell their 1 million BTC in protest against any change to Bitcoin’s 1MB block size.
Since the 2017 bull run, Popescu has become more private. It is not known how much BTC he still owns and if anyone is holding the wallet passwords other than him.
