TikTok wants to adjust the algorithm to avoid negative emotions for users

Just a few years after its launch, TikTok is now one of the largest social media platforms in the world, with its user base still expanding extremely rapidly.

One of the core factors contributing to that success lies in an extremely unique algorithm, which uses AI and machine learning to deliver personalized recommendations perfect for each person’s taste. . This algorithm is hidden under “For You” – “For You”, as a continuous feed.

It doesn’t have to be too subtle for TikTok users to realize that the video recommendation algorithm on Tiktok works very smart. It always brings videos that are “trending” and relevant to many topics that viewers are interested in. However, this can sometimes become a double-edged sword. Constantly recommending content on such a topic inadvertently “spins” deep into the negative emotions that users are experiencing. This basically does not violate TikTok’s platform policy, but negatively affects the psychology of users. For example, content about loneliness, breakup, sadness, etc.

To fix the problem, the TikTok development team has just announced that it will soon launch additional customizations to the algorithm on the “For You” page, to enrich the recommended content. Especially to prevent the phenomenon of users being too immersed in an emotion, gradually increasing negative thoughts, also known as the term “fall down the rabbit hole”.

In fact, this is also a problem that many other social media platforms have been facing, but have not been able to find an effective solution. TikTok’s approach will be more “aggressive”, not only removing negative content that “resonates” with users, but also changing how often such videos are shown on personal feeds core.

Additionally, TikTok also plans to expand its feed management features to users, with a new tool to “help people customize their feeds | Vegetarians, for example, are less likely to encounter meat-based cooking videos. In addition, there will also be a “content filter” feature, which helps users use keywords and hashtags to filter out the content they do not want to see. All will be gradually deployed by TikTok in the near future.
