Why can’t I turn off Windows 10 updates?

If your computer is running Windows 10, one inconvenience is that you will always be forced to install Microsoft’s automatic Windows 10 updates (whether you like it or not). Even sometimes you’re working on a computer, but Windows keeps updating automatically, interrupting work.

1. Why can’t automatic updates update Windows 10?

Microsoft policy states that Windows 10 updates will automatically install on Home users’ computers. Even Microsoft removes all settings that allow disabling updates. So if you’re using Windows 10 Home edition, you won’t be able to stop updating Windows 10.

For Windows 8.1 and earlier, you can choose to update Windows with the following 4 options:
– Install automatic updates (Recommended)
– Download Updates while selecting a time to install
– Check for updates but decide whether to download and install it
– Never check for updates (Not recommended)

In Windows 10, all these options have been deleted and you cannot turn off automatic updates.

2.1. Completely uninstall Windows 10 Update Assistant

Sometimes, even if you’ve tried solutions to stop updating Windows 10, it still doesn’t work. One of the reasons may be that the Windows 10 Update Assistant has modified the settings in your computer and the automatic updates of Windows 10 start working again.

So if you have installed Windows 10 Update Assistant in your computer, you should uninstall it completely.

Note: if you do not want to uninstall the Windows 10 Update Assistant, you can disable it from Task Scheduler. Just moved in Task Scheduler >Task Scheduler Library >Microsoft >Windows >UpdateOrchestrator, then press Update Assistant on the right side. Make sure that you have disabled each of the tabs in the tab Triggers.

+ Click on the logo Windows and R at the same time, enter appwiz.cpl and click OK, got it
+ Find Windows 10 Update Assistant In the programs listed and right-click on it, then select Uninstall (Uninstall)
+ Confirm delete
+ Open File Explorer and click This PC
+ If Windows Update Assistant is installed by default when you install Windows operating system, access the file at the location where your system is installed, normally, it will be in This PC >C drive >Windows >Windows10Upgrade, then delete the folder Windows10Upgrade.
+ If Windows 10 Update Assistant is installed separately, you can go to the saved location and delete the installation directory. It is often named as Windows10Upgrade.
+ Access This PC >Windows, delete the named folders UpdateAssistantV2 and UpdateAssistant.

After completely uninstalling the Windows 10 Update Assistant, restart your computer, then you can try the following methods to stop updating Windows 10:

2.2. Restrict network connection to stop updating Windows 10

Many people may not realize that there is a simple way to stop automatic updates of Windows 10. You can set your WiFi network limit. If your computer is connected to WiFi, you can try the following steps:
+ Click the button Start at the bottom left of the screen, then click Settings (Setting)
+ Select Network & Internet
+ Click WIFI on the left pane, then click your Wi-Fi connection name
+ Click Set as metered connection

When doing this, Windows will assume that you have a limited data plan when using WiFi, so it will not automatically update in your computer. However, if your computer is connected to Ethernet, Windows will assume you have an unlimited data plan and this method will not work.

2.3. Disable the Windows Update service to stop updating Windows 10

The Windows Update service can detect, download, and install updates and Windows programs. When turned off, it will not be able to use the automatic update feature and therefore, programs will not be able to automatically download and install.

Before disabling the Windows Update service, make sure that you turn off the Windows Update Assistant. You can then perform the following steps:
+ Press the logo key combination Windows and R at the same time to open the Run box
+ Enter services.msc and press Enter
+ Scroll down Windows Update and double click it.
+ In Startup type, choose Disabled. Then click Apply and OK, got it to save settings
+ If this is the first time you stop the Windows Update service, you also need to take one more step: In Windows Update Properties, click on the tab Recovery (Restore), choose Take No Action in section First failure, then press Apply and OK, got it to save settings
+ Restart the PC

2.4. Change Group Policy settings to stop updating Windows 10

You can also use the Group Policy Editor to change the settings that prevent Windows 10 from automatically updating.

+ Press the logo key combination Windows and R at the same time to open the Run box
+ Enter gpedit.msc and OK, got it
+ Move to Computer Configuration >Administrative Templates> Windows Components >Windows Update
+ Double click Configure Automatic Updates
+ Select Disable in Configured Automatic Updates on the left then click Apply and OK, got it to turn off Windows automatic updates

When you need to update to the latest version of Windows, you can repeat the steps above, then select Enabled to enable this feature.

Note: You should not turn it off because sometimes this option may cause you to miss important Windows updates. It is better to choose Enabled, later choose 2 – Notify for download and auto install (Notice to download and install automatically). By doing so, you will receive a notification about new Windows updates and you can choose a desired download time.

2.5. Change Device Installation Settings to stop updating Windows 10

If you don’t want to automatically update device drivers in your computer, you can try the following steps:
+ Enter Control Panel (Dashboard) in the search box
+ Click System (System)
+ Click Advanced system settings (Advanced system settings) on the left
+ Click the tab Hardware, then select Device Installation Settings
+ Select No(your device might not work as expected) and click Save changes
+ Click OK, got it to complete the installation. After that, your device driver will not automatically download the updates.
